Rivian and Redwood Materials have launched a pioneering partnership to deploy a 10-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) at Rivian's manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. The system utilizes more than 100 retired Rivian battery packs, transforming them into a dispatchable energy asset.
This project converts end-of-life EV batteries into stationary storage that reduces peak demand charges and enhances grid reliability. Redwood Materials integrates the packs using its proprietary Pack Manager technology, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
This means commercial and industrial facilities can now adopt a scalable, economically viable solution for on-site energy storage to address rising electricity costs and grid instability. The model demonstrates a clear pathway to secure low-cost, dispatchable power while extending battery lifecycles and supporting circular economy principles.
